Xantar 2020 highlights the role of food and wine in revitalizing the rural environment

Ourense, 03/02 / 2020.- Xantar, the only accredited International Gastronomic Tourism Fair of the Iberian Peninsula, celebrates its 21st edition in Ourense between February 5 and 9, focused on promoting the role played by gastronomy and It came to revitalize the rural environment by helping to establish population and face the demographic challenge. To this objective is added the prominent role that the candidacy of the Ribeira Sacra to UNESCO World Heritage Site will have.
Expourense will become this week the epicenter of food and wine tourism, bringing together 298 exhibitors (a figure slightly higher than the previous edition) and with 9 countries represented (Spain, Portugal, Costa Rica, Cape Verde, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Panama and Argentina ).
The traditional and close cross-border cooperation with Portugal will also coexist with Ibero-American cooperation. Regarding activities, Xantar will bring together renowned chefs from 6 countries who will teach live cooking workshops within the framework of the XV International Meeting of Healthy and Sustainable Gastronomy that will offer the public more than 150 experiences.
The 21st edition of Xantar was presented this morning at Expourense in an act in which representatives of the public entities that have supported this event since its inception participated. The Executive Vice President of Expourense and Deputy Mayor of Ourense, Jorge Pumar; the territorial delegate of the Xunta de Galicia in Ourense, Marisol Díaz; the vice president of the Diputación de Ourense and president of INORDE, Rosendo Fernández; the councilor for Tourism and Thermalism of Ourense, Flora Moure, and the director of Xantar, Emma González. All of them put the hall as an example of public-private cooperation and highlighted the international projection that it gives to agri-food and sea products and to the hospitality industry in Galicia.
Among the novelties of this edition are those that have as their objective the revitalization of the rural environment and the enhancement of the territory from which agri-food products arise. The wine will be one of the protagonists with the celebration of a certified Course of Initiation to Tasting given by the Instituto Galego do Viño and also of the Conference on Demographic Challenge and Population Fixation in Rural, “Wine Talks”, which includes the conference of five Galician winemakers and the subsequent tasting of their wines.
Another novelty will be the celebration, on Thursday February 6, of the fourth and final semifinal of the VIII Chef of the Year Contest and the IV Waiter of the Year Contest. Eight chefs and five waiters from Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Euskadi, La Rioja and Navarra will compete to reach the national final to be held in April 2020, at the Food Fair in Barcelona.
150 ENOGASTRONOMIC EXPERIENCES
The Xantar 2020 activities program includes both expert conferences and live cooking exhibitions, as well as commented tastings and tastings included in the “XV International Meeting on Sustainable and Healthy Gastronomy”. It will offer the public more than 150 experiences, that is, an average of 4 activities for each hour of the salon. Renowned chefs from 6 countries will give a total of 70 showcookings to which must be added 45 commented tastings of different products and more than 50 tastings of indigenous products.
In this program, those organized by the Ministry of Rural Affairs and the Maritime Ministry stand out, with the aim of highlighting quality products from Galicia protected with Designation of Origin, Protected Geographical Indication, or with guarantee stamps such as “PescadeRías” and the canned fish and shellfish from ANFACO-CECOPESCA. Galician chefs such as Flavio Morganti, José Manuel Mallón, Emma Pinal, Fernando Agrasar or the 13 members of the “Cociña Ourense” Association, among many others, will participate. Important chefs from Portugal, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru and Chile will also perform. In this edition we must also add media chefs such as chef Betina Montagne, pastry chef and jury for the television program “Bake off”.
To accommodate this extensive program of activities, Xantar will have three gastronomic classrooms, one for Tasting and a Tunnel for Wine, Brandy and Spirits. The latter has the support of the five Galician wine regulatory councils and will present more than 150 Galician references including for the first time to wines recognized with Protected Geographical Indication I.G.P.
